New research warns that if workers don’t use their vacation time to relax and unwind and instead let work creep into their time off and attend to their email, they are putting their physical and mental health at risk.
The study, from the University of South Australia, surveyed more than 2,200 academics and professionals from 40 Australian universities, and found that employees who responded to digital work communications after hours were more likely to suffer from burnout, psychological distress and poor physical health.
In addition, 50 percent stated that they often receive work-related texts, calls and emails from colleagues over the weekend and 36 percent reported that it was the norm in their organization to respond immediately to digital communications.
It therefore highlights that this research “shows that high levels of digital communication outside working hours can have a significant impact on their physical and mental well-being, affecting work-family relationships, causing psychological distress and poor physical health. In contrast, workers who kept their work boundaries under control experienced less stress and pressure.”

It is no longer just a post-holiday delirium. In Chile, as is happening in other parts of the world, some companies have taken seriously the search for ways to reduce the number of working hours. Taking care of mental health and productivity, especially in the context of a pandemic, has emerged as a priority issue. And, on reflection, no one seems to doubt the benefit of the steps taken.
Caja Los Andes is another company that has opted for the reduction of working hours to less than the 45 hours a week that governs the country. Since 2009, the company had been working an average of 41.25 hours per week and recently announced a reduction to 39 hours per week.
In practice, the benefit is aimed at almost three thousand workers throughout Chile, both for those who work at Caja Los Andes, as well as the Tapp team (digital account and prepaid card).
